Anschließend sammelte er Marketing- und Vertriebserfahrungen bei Internetdienstleistern: bei der TELES AG in Berlin und der GEDYS Internet Products AG in Braunschweig. Von 2001 an war Herr Schmidt fünf Jahre als Projektmanager mit dem Aufbau des Internetportals „Bildungsportal Thüringen“ betraut. Ehrenamtlich bietet Herr Schmidt Stadtführungen durch das mittelalterliche Erfurt an und engagiert sich im Museumsverein auf der Leuchtenburg.
